August 2024, Namibia

Having visited Namibia three times already, I thought I knew what to expect. But my recent stay at Naankuse Lodge proved once again how this incredible country can surprise and delight.

I originally planned to stay only one night at Naankuse Lodge — just a quick stopover on my trip. But then I spontaneously decided to extend it to two nights. Partly because I wanted to visit a friend that works there, and partly because I realized: one night is simply not enough. Two nights allow for a much deeper experience.

And what a great decision that was!

The journey there immediately helped me breathe deeply: the lodge is wonderfully remote yet only about 30 minutes from Windhoek Airport — the perfect first or last stop when visiting Namibia.

What I didn’t expect: the main lodge’s bungalows were fully booked, so I was upgraded at no extra cost to a private villa owned by one of the lodge’s donors. This spacious villa normally accommodates six people — and I had it all to myself! Three bedrooms, a large veranda, and breathtaking views over the vast African bush. I was absolutely overwhelmed.

I danced through the entire villa (really!), then made myself a coffee and sat on the terrace, soaking in the sounds of nature: just the wind rustling the trees and birds singing. Pure bliss — I was so happy to be in the bush.

Wildlife up close – game drive, new friends & sundowners

That afternoon, we went on our first game drive with a fantastic guide, together with a large, super funny Italian group. We laughed so much — it was wonderful to meet such warm-hearted people and share this safari experience.

And the wildlife did not disappoint: we saw lions, rhinos incredibly close, a jackal, and many other animals. Truly breathtaking! To cap off the afternoon, we enjoyed a classic sundowner in the bush: drinks in hand, soft light falling, and the day winding down. Pure magic.

The k9 program – four-legged heroes in action

The next morning, I had the special opportunity to visit the Naankuse K9 anti-poaching unit.

This program is a vital part of the fight against poaching in Namibia. Specially trained dogs and their handlers work side by side to protect endangered species like rhinos, leopards, and cheetahs. The dogs are trained to detect weapons, ammunition, poached meat, and poacher tracks — lifesaving skills in areas where poaching remains a serious threat.

I watched a training session and was deeply impressed: the dogs are focused, motivated, and clearly love their work. The bond between dog and handler is obvious and inspiring. Many of these dogs were rescued and given a meaningful purpose here.

It was a powerful and moving experience that gave me a new appreciation for conservation efforts like this.

Another sundowner – a quiet moment at sunset

That evening, I went on another game drive — almost alone this time. The sunset was even more intense and peaceful than the day before. A second sundowner, this time in quiet solitude, overlooking the endless savanna. A moment I will never forget.

My verdict

Naankuse Lodge is much more than just a place to stay — it’s a place of vast horizons, nature, warm hospitality, and deep commitment.

From the unexpected villa upgrade, through new international friendships, to the courageous dogs of the K9 program — this stay was simply unforgettable.

If you love Namibia, or if you’re looking for a meaningful entry into southern Africa, I highly recommend spending at least two nights at Naankuse. It’s truly worth it.

Me and my coffee, in the morning light — that’s where my heart lives, where it always flies. Africa, I love you.
