In February 2022, I spent exactly nine days on the grounds of Gmundner Lodge (my stay was at the farm, located on the same property but separate from the main lodge area, closer to where the staff live and work). During this time, I had the opportunity to visit the lodge itself, explore the surroundings, and gain a close look at the luxury and philosophy that define this extraordinary destination.
Set on a private 6,000-hectare reserve in Namibia, Gmundner Lodge is an exclusive hideaway that blends modern comfort with raw, untouched nature. The lodge features twelve elegant suites, each designed with privacy and relaxation in mind. From romantic four-poster beds and walk-in closets to freestanding outdoor bathtubs and private bars stocked with selected treats – the attention to detail is truly impressive. The materials used throughout the lodge are locally sourced, reflecting a deep commitment to sustainability.
Although I didn’t stay in the lodge itself, I was able to experience its unique atmosphere – and it’s nothing short of spectacular. What stood out most was the seamless integration of Austrian heritage and Namibian wilderness. The lodge was established in 2021 with deep respect for nature, local culture, and the environment. It draws inspiration from Gmundner Keramik, Europe’s oldest ceramics manufacturer, bringing centuries of craftsmanship into a new chapter of luxury in the African bush.
Guests at Gmundner Lodge can enjoy a wide variety of experiences – from guided nature walks and wildlife viewing to scenic helicopter rides and immersive cultural excursions. For those looking to unwind, the full-service spa offers treatments based on the holistic Makai™ method, which is rooted in indigenous wisdom and designed to bring harmony to both body and mind.
A central part of the property is the Gmundner Farm – the very place I stayed during my visit. The farm embodies the philosophy of "back to nature" and focuses on sustainable agriculture. Seasonal vegetables and herbs are grown right there, supporting the lodge’s kitchen and community while minimizing waste and environmental impact.
During my time there, I also gained some insight into the working and living environment of the staff. At that time, I had the impression that not all employees were treated equally or fairly. Fortunately, from what I’ve heard since, there have been significant improvements, and the lodge now places greater emphasis on fair working conditions and staff well-being – a positive and important development.
It’s worth mentioning that Gmundner Lodge is positioned at the higher end of the luxury scale – but for travelers in search of a once-in-a-lifetime experience in Namibia’s pristine wilderness, it’s well worth the investment. This is more than just a place to stay – it’s a destination that invites you to reconnect, recharge, and be inspired.
One of the absolute highlights of my stay was an unforgettable sundowner ride on horseback. We rode up to a beautiful lookout point, where the vast landscape unfolded before us in complete silence. The sky turned into a breathtaking palette of colors as the sun dipped below the horizon – it was one of the most magical sunsets I’ve ever experienced.
Here are some insights from my time at Gmundner Farm – with a few snapshots from my personal experience to complement the professional images of the lodge.
