A few magical days at Gabus Safari Lodge in Namibia

After spending two weeks volunteering at Rooisand Desert Ranch, I wanted to explore something different in Namibia. I heard about Gabus Safari Lodge near Otavi, which also welcomes volunteers. This time, I visited as a guest — looking forward to relaxing, enjoying the stunning nature, and connecting with other volunteers.

Safe and easy journey to Gabus

Getting there was easy and safe. I took the Go2 Shuttle, which dropped me off in Otjiwarongo. From there, the friendly lodge staff picked me up. Before heading to Gabus, we stopped at a Spar supermarket in Otjiwarongo. I love visiting supermarkets abroad — there’s something exciting about seeing local products, watching people, and experiencing local life.

First impressions and beautiful surroundings

I stayed for 5 nights at Gabus Safari Lodge, and from the moment I arrived, I felt the special atmosphere. The lodge is set on a vast 6,200-hectare private game reserve surrounded by beautiful savannah and mountains. My room overlooked a waterhole where I watched wild animals like kudus, wildebeests, impalas, and even horses come to drink. The waterhole is lit at night, offering amazing wildlife viewing after dark.

Cozy, family-run lodge with delicious food

Gabus is a family-run lodge managed by the Kuehl family since 1995, with just 16 rooms and a couple of campsites. It feels very personal and cozy, like a home away from home. The food was always excellent — fresh, tasty, and made with care. The lodge focuses on sustainability, using solar power during the day and sourcing vegetables from local farms and their own garden.

Adventures: Game Drives and horseback riding

During my stay, I enjoyed two game drives where I saw giraffes, elands, mountain zebras, and many other species. I also went horseback riding through the bush, which was incredible — I got so close to giraffes and even a sable antelope. The lodge is a popular stop for visitors going to or coming from Etosha National Park, making it a perfect quiet break.

Meeting new friends and local fun

One of the highlights was meeting the volunteers—two ladies from Germany—and the guests, with whom I sometimes bonded. Together, we shared great evenings filled with stories, card games, and gin & tonics under the African stars. Simple moments like these make a trip unforgettable.

The last day of my stay featured a local football tournament where farm and lodge teams, along with their staff, competed. It was a lively event, complete with auctions raising money for a good cause and dancing in the evening. Afterward, some of us returned to the lodge for a few drinks — it was so much fun and a perfect way to end my stay.

A fond farewell and new adventures ahead

After five wonderful nights at Gabus, I decided to leave a day earlier to start my next adventure in Namibia, feeling grateful for all the memories and new friendships.

If you’re looking for a place where nature, comfort, and genuine hospitality meet, Gabus Safari Lodge is an excellent choice. You’ll leave with more than photos — you’ll leave with stories and connections that stay with you.
